I know most of you are probably thinking this is a no-brainer. That the next thing on the Cubs’ radar is the playoffs. That the 18 remaining days, during which the Cubs play 17 times, can kind of get glossed over.
I’m here to tell you that is the formula for some terrible playoff mojo. Now, I’m not trying to scare anyone with this, my point is pretty simple: if the Cubs aren’t careful over these next 3 or so weeks they risk becoming complacent. And that is bad. freakin. news.
Obviously, the #1 priority remains getting everyone as healthy as possible before October. THAT, is a no-brainer. But in terms of the roster more generally, I think it’s going to be important for guys like Addison Russell, and Javy Baez, and Wilson Contreras to still get regular at-bats for the remainder of the regular season.
The bonus that the remaining games are against not only division rivals, but specifically the Cards and Pirates who are both, to some extent, in contention for the wild card — the Cards more so than the Pirates, but you get the idea. This means Chicago will still be getting some decent competition before the real battle begins.
