Well shit. That sucked.
Nursing a 2 run lead in the 7th, John Lackey (who pitched beautifully tonight) gave up a 2 run homer to Matt Adams. That tied it, and gave way for Adam Warren to come in for what could have been some extended relief, had this one gone to extras.
But instead, Warren gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the 9th on a 2-2 pitch with 2 outs.
I don’t really know what to say about it. Lackey struck out 9 Cardinals, gave up only 4 hits, and walked only 1. Warren, who has been great this year, allowed only 1 hit as well in an inning and 2/3 of relief. Unfortunately for Warren and the Cubs, that 1 hit happened to cost the Cubs the fucking game.
Bottom line here is that in the same way the Cubs have been pretty reliant on the long ball as of late, the Cards were completely reliant on it tonight. St. Louis mustered up only 5 hits, and scored only as a result of homers (minus a 1st inning sac fly). Even more telling, St. Louis was 0 for 1 with RISP. 0 for 1. Let that sink in. Now technically they got 2 guys into scoring position, and sort of executed in one of those instances, and that won’t show up in this column because sacrifices don’t count as ABs, but still 0 for freaking 1. All night the Cardinals were only able to get 2 dudes to 2nd base or beyond and we still lose the damn game.
In other news, Jorge Soler went o for 3 with 2 strikeouts. Wait, that’s not news, that’s normal. You know what, forget I even mentioned it everything is normal in the Soler system.
