April 14: Cubs Rout Reds 8-1; Move to 8-1 on Season

For the final game of the series against Cincinnati the Cubbies didn’t hold back. Hanging 11 hits on the Reds’ staff, Chicago continued to look dominant as they expanded their MLB leading +43 run differential on the season. For a little perspective, that’s 19 runs better than the second place team, the St. Louis Cardinals. Yeah, we’re pretty good.

On to the ballgame:

Kris Bryant got the whole thang started with a solo shot to left in the 2nd. It was KB’s 2nd homer in the last 2 games, both of which coming in the early innings.

Jason Hammel started the game and looked great, just as he did in his season debut against Arizona. Hammel surrendered only 4 hits over 6 frames, and, most importantly, have up 0 runs.

At the same time, the offense continued to roll. But after Bryant’s dinger, and a couple fruitless frames, and unlikely catalyst would emerge in the 5th; our boy Jason Hammel. With Addison Russell on, Hammel swept a double into the gap in right, driving home Russell, and getting things kickstarted for the Cubbies. Zobrist would later fly to center with Hammel tagging and scoring from 3rd.

Fast forward to the 8th, Miguel Montero gets a bloop single to fall, loading the bases for Addy Russell who would start to break this one open with an RBI single. Following Russell, Matt Szczur came on to hit for the pitcher, and was promptly walked by Reds’ reliever JJ Hoover, forcing in another run. The top of the order would come up with 2 more RBIs to close the inning. Fowler, who continued his outstanding play at the plate would drive in Montero on a single through the gap between 1st and 2nd, and Heyward would fly to center, with Szczur tagging and scoring.

In the 9th, Justin Grimm had the rock, and didn’t look all that solid, giving up a run. But honestly, who cares? Cubs win, Cubs win! First team in MLB to 8 wins this season; first time the franchise has been 8-1 since 1968. Pretty good stuff, pretty good team.

Rockies up next. #GoCubsGo
